Behind The Scenes - A STEAM-Focused Technical Theatre Program

"Behind The Scenes" is an innovative Technical Theatre program for entry-level students that integrates a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) approach into production. Students explore key design concepts, industry-standard equipment, and the overall production process, applying physics in stage mechanics, biology in acoustics, electrical engineering in lighting, color theory in design, and math in set construction. The program culminates in a final production where students manage all technical aspects, merging science with creativity. This hands-on experience prepares. students for career pathways in technical theatre, engineering, design, and related fields.

"Behind The Scenes" was first implemented in El Monte, CA in Mountain View School district in the Summer of 2024.

The program was created as a way to provide students with a STEAM forward approach to technical theatre & was piloted in 2 different Elementary Schools to over 100 students grades 3-5. Students were provided the opportunity to work with industry standard equipment learn several different kinds of theatrical design, and work together to create a cohesive vision through scenery and props.

The course culminated in over 150 audience members attending Musical Performances that were largely run by our technical theatre students, many of which had never previously been exposed to the Theatre Arts before this experience.

Katie Grace Hennen is a seasoned professional in education, performing arts, and nonprofit administration. She graduated from Augsburg University in Minneapolis, MN with a BA in English specializing in Elizabethan Drama. She served as Executive Fellow at The Association for Recovery in Higher Education and as Admissions Coordinator at the Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School. Currently, Katie Grace serves as the Director of Education at Arts and Learning Conservatory and is actively engaged in her community, participating in initiatives with the Santa Ana and Inland Empire Chambers of Commerce and the NMUSD Arts Commission.

Lizzy McCabe is a Director, Producer & Arts Administrator and serves as the Founding Executive Artistic Director of The Larking House Theatre Company. She is an elected Board Member for the Orange County Theatre Guild, and acts as the Theatre Programs Manager for Arts & Learning Conservatory. Her career has found her working with theatre companies all over SoCa including The Wayward Artist, Playground LA, Shakespeare Orange County, and The Curtis Theatre in Brea. Lizzy received her BA in Theatre from CSU Fullerton with a specialization in Stage Direction and is passionate about creating opportunity for young emerging artists.

Nekoa Utai, based in Orange County, CA, is a seasoned performer and technician with over 20 years of experience. A graduate of the Academy of Performing Arts in Huntington Beach, he holds a Professional Dance ROP certification and has worked as a professional dancer.
Currently, Nekoa serves as the Technical Production Manager for ALC and performs as a DJ throughout Southern California. As the owner of Independent Visions, ( a music and performance production company), he combines his expertise in performance and technical production to deliver exceptional results in the entertainment industry.
